1972-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST with triple impressions on the lower right serifs of the letters TR distinguishes this first doubled die obverse for the 1972-S Eisenhower Dollar. VarietyVista cataloged the variety with die markers UVC-042 and DMR-003, recording die stages with Stage A showing obverse and reverse in early die state, a second Stage A notation at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The triple impression on TR is particularly noteworthy — tripling occurs when three distinct hub impressions entered the die at slightly different positions, an unusual occurrence since most doubled dies result from only two misaligned impressions. The 1972-S Eisenhower Dollar was struck at San Francisco, where both proof and business-strike versions were produced. Frank Gasparro designed both the obverse portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the reverse eagle-landing-on-the-moon motif commemorating the Apollo 11 mission. The Eisenhower Dollar series (1971-1978) was the last large-format dollar coin at 38.1mm diameter, and its substantial size made die varieties more visible to the naked eye than on smaller denominations. As the primary DDO for the 1972-S date, this variety commands attention from Eisenhower Dollar specialists tracking hub anomalies.
