1972 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-I, the 1972 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004 on the Eisenhower Dollar displays a Class I clockwise spread visible on USA, the stars, ONE DOLLAR, the olive branch and leaves, the craters, the designer's initials, and slightly on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Eisenhower Dollar, designed by Frank Gasparro with the Apollo 11 eagle landing reverse, was struck in cupronickel-clad copper at 22.68 grams and 38.1 mm diameter. Class I hub doubling results from a rotated hub impression during the die-making process, producing consistent directional spread across all affected design elements. Obverse die markers note that master die doubling can be found on the obverse, a characteristic shared across many 1972 Eisenhower dies. The reverse uses the Type A design configuration. A strong die scratch runs from NE to SW through the G in FG (Frank Gasparro's initials) to the crater below, while a short die scratch runs WNW from the upper left R in DOLLAR. The CONECA 1-R-I cross-reference confirms this as the first Class I reverse doubled die in their cataloging sequence for the 1972 date, establishing its position within the broader universe of Eisenhower Dollar varieties.
