Description
The 1972 Eisenhower Dollar - Type 3 is a dollar minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978 series. The U.S. Mint reported 75.9 million Eisenhower dollars from Philadelphia for 1972 across all three reverse types; how many are Type 3 is unknown. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The 1972 Philadelphia dollars come with three reverses: Type 1 shows three islands to the right of Florida, Type 2 has no islands below Florida, and Type 3 shows islands below Florida, with stronger relief (NGC). Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $7 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 22.68 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7409.
