1971-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Gary G. Wagnon, WDDO-015 of the 1971-S proof Jefferson nickel is a remarkable triple-variety coin. The obverse exhibits an extremely close Class II distorted hub doubling spread toward the rim on the designer's initials FS (Felix Schlag), the date, the star, and LIBERTY, while also carrying a repunched mintmark listed as WRPM-002. The reverse die is independently cataloged as WDDR-014, a doubled die reverse. This convergence of DDO, RPM, and DDR on a single die pair makes it an exceptionally interesting variety for specialists. Obverse die markers include die scratches on the rim above RTY of LIBERTY and die scratches on the rim above WE. The close RPM on the S mintmark adds a third layer of collectibility to a coin already bearing doubled dies on both sides. Proof Jefferson nickels of this era were struck at the San Francisco Mint, and the simultaneous presence of three distinct variety types on one die marriage is uncommon in the series, elevating WDDO-015 to a prominent position among 1971-S proof nickel varieties.
