1971-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014
Error
Description
Attributed by Stephen L. Green, this proof 1971 San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDO-014 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a nice, fairly constant spread toward the center visible on LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials. The consistent magnitude of the spread across these scattered design elements indicates a uniform hub displacement rather than a pivoting or tilting motion. An important caveat accompanies this listing: the specimen examined showed possible machine doubling on some design elements, meaning collectors should carefully distinguish between the genuine hub doubling and any mechanical doubling that may coexist on individual coins. The proof striking process, with its polished dies and controlled conditions, typically produces sharper doubled die features than business strikes. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1971-S WDDO-014 Proof, the multi-element obverse spread and center-directed displacement characterize this as a textbook Class II doubled die on a proof Jefferson Nickel.
