Description

Discovered by Gary G. Wagnon, this 1971-S proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with very close spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials FS — the monogram of Felix Schlag, who won the 1938 design competition for the Jefferson Nickel series. The very close spread requires careful magnification to resolve, as the secondary impression sits nearly atop the primary, producing subtly thickened design elements rather than widely separated images. A die gouge at the back of Jefferson's collar on the obverse provides a useful secondary attribution marker. This die is paired with the reverse listed as 1971-S Pr 5c WDDR-008, creating a dual variety where both the obverse and reverse carry independent hub doubling — a pairing that enhances the attribution interest considerably.
