1971-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Discovered by Gary G. Wagnon on a 1971-S Proof Jefferson Nickel, WDDO-003 displays Class II distorted hub doubling with center-directed spread affecting multiple obverse elements. The doubling is visible on LIBERTY, the Monticello star, the date, and the designer's initials, with very slight spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Among these areas, LIBERTY shows the strongest displacement, making it the primary examination point. The obverse carries a die scratch on the rim above the first T of TRUST as its diagnostic marker. Notably, the paired reverse die is itself a doubled die cataloged as 1971-S Pr 5¢ WDDR-003, creating a dual doubled die marriage where both sides exhibit attributable hub doubling. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1971-S WDDO-003 Proof, this variety represents a compelling find for proof nickel specialists, as two independently doubled dies in a single pair occurs infrequently and elevates numismatic interest.
