1971-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Struck at Denver for general circulation, DDR-002 on the 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar displays strong spread affecting all reverse stars, the earth, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the upper wing feathers. The breadth of doubling across so many design elements makes this one of the more visually compelling Eisenhower Dollar doubled die reverses, with the stars and earth providing accessible pickup points even under modest magnification. VarietyVista catalogs this variety as UVC-127 and DMR-008, with notable die stage documentation: Stage A records the reverse in early die state alongside numerous obverse die scratches introduced to abrade away evidence of a die clash — indicating the Mint polished the obverse die to remove inadvertent design transfer, advancing it to mid-die-state. Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. The reverse is designated RDV-001. The 1971-D was the first Denver-minted Eisenhower Dollar, struck in copper-nickel clad for circulation. The die clash evidence preserved in the abraded obverse scratches adds a secondary layer of manufacturing history, documenting both the original clash event and the Mint's corrective intervention.
