1970-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1970-S WDDR-007 Proof and attributed by Whaden Curtis, this San Francisco proof Jefferson nickel exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling on the reverse. A close spread toward the center appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS, decreasing from left to right, while a very close spread follows the same pattern on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Doubling is also visible on MONTICELLO. The obverse carries a short vertical die gouge in the upper portion of the 9 in the date. Reverse die markers include three slightly slanted die scratches in the lower right arch, two slightly slanted die scratches in the upper left arch, a short vertical die gouge between the first U and N of UNUM, and another above the R of PLURIBUS. As a proof issue, this variety was struck on specially prepared planchets with polished dies, and the mirror-like fields can make doubled die characteristics more challenging to detect. The left-to-right diminishing spread is characteristic of Class II distorted hub doubling where the working hub warped slightly during the impression process.
