1970-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-015
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with codes UVC-1781 and DMR-035, this 1970-S Proof Jefferson Nickel carries a doubled die reverse with light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA, increasing in intensity from left to right. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the San Francisco Mint as a proof issue, this coin was produced during the transition years when San Francisco shifted from business-strike production to its modern role as the primary proof coin facility. The left-to-right increase in spread indicates rotational hub doubling where the pivot point lies to the left of the affected legends. In its early die state (Stage A), the reverse carries a die gouge between the upper R and I of PLURIBUS and another die gouge in the upper portion of the first U in UNUM; the obverse at this stage also shows early die state characteristics. These early-die-state markers are valuable to collectors because they confirm acquisition of an example struck before significant die wear obscured the diagnostics. The DDR-015 sequence number reflects the substantial catalog of doubled dies documented for 1970-S proof nickels.
