1970-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-013
Error
Description
Produced at San Francisco as a proof striking, this thirteenth documented doubled die reverse for the 1970-S Jefferson Nickel records a hub misalignment during die production that left visible doubling on the Monticello reverse. The 1970-S proof was part of an era when San Francisco was the exclusive source of proof coinage for collectors, continuing the tradition Felix Schlag's design had carried since 1938. Proof dies are manufactured under controlled conditions, yet the hubbing process that creates them remains susceptible to the same misalignment that produces doubled dies on business strike dies. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1719 and DMR-031, three die stages have been tracked: Stage A at early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). Both Stage B and Stage C remain unconfirmed, meaning specimens at these later deterioration levels have yet to be positively identified — an opportunity for collectors examining 1970-S proof nickels. Thirteen DDRs for this proof date confirms the depth of variety research on early 1970s San Francisco proof production.
