1970-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-011
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as the eleventh doubled die reverse for the 1970-S Jefferson Nickel, DDR-011 displays light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with the doubling intensity decreasing from left to right across the inscription. This left-to-right diminishing pattern is characteristic of a rotational hub misalignment, where one end of the die received more displacement than the other during the impression process. The 1970-S nickel was struck exclusively for proof and mint sets at San Francisco, which had resumed using the S mintmark that year after the three-year moratorium on mintmark usage. Die markers cataloged under UVC-1385 and DMR-028 document three stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in Early Die State, Stage B at Mid-Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (also unconfirmed). The progression from EDS through unconfirmed later stages suggests limited specimen reporting for this variety, and collectors who locate examples in confirmed MDS or LDS would contribute valuable data toward completing the die stage census.
