1970-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006
Error
Description
Closely related to but distinct from DDR-007, this sixth doubled die reverse for the 1970-S Jefferson Nickel exhibits light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with the doubling increasing from left to right — a pattern shared with several other DDRs from this date but differentiated through unique die marker tracking. UVC-1380 and DMR-023 establish this as a separate working die from DDR-007 (UVC-1381/DMR-024), despite both varieties sharing similar spread characteristics and direction. Three documented die stages track the die's service life: Stage A with both surfaces in Early Die State, Stage B at Mid-Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The San Francisco Mint's 1970 nickel production served both circulation needs and the proof set program, and the high number of DDRs documented for this single date-mintmark combination reflects the intensive scrutiny variety researchers have applied to 1970-S coinage. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the systematic UVC numbering system enables collectors and researchers to track individual working dies across the documented census and distinguish between varieties that might otherwise appear superficially similar under casual examination.
