Description

Identified by a proof-explicit title, this entry for WDDO-042 on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent documents clockwise spread on a proof Large Date die with die markers spanning both surfaces. CW hub doubling rotates the secondary impression clockwise relative to the primary — directionally opposite to the more commonly encountered CCW varieties in the 1970-S proof series. Die scratches on the vest and nose provide obverse markers spanning Lincoln's portrait vertically. A die gouge at the right Memorial base anchors reverse identification, with additional scratches in the second and fifth Memorial bays providing supplementary markers distributed across the column structure. This four-zone marker concentration gives WDDO-042 one of the more comprehensive identification frameworks among higher-numbered proof 1970-S doubled dies. The combination of CW spread direction (less common than CCW) and multiple distributed markers makes this variety efficiently screened and reliably attributed even by collectors less experienced with subtle doubled die detection.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: Large Date. Die scratches run N/S on the lower front of the vest. Die scratches run N/S on the upper back of the nose. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found between the tip of the right Memorial base and the rim. A die scratch runs SSW/NNE in the lower second Memorial bay. A vertical die scratch can be found in the upper fifth bay.
