1970-S Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-029
Error
Description
Documented under a proof-specific title, this entry for WDDO-029 on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent captures strong tripled counterclockwise spread on a proof Large Date die. Tripling occurs when three distinct hub impressions are detectable — the hub contacted the die at three measurably different rotational positions during sinking. This creates a more complex visual signature than standard doubling: affected elements display two levels of shadow flanking the primary impression, producing a layered appearance under magnification. Heavy scratches at the rim above TR on the obverse and a die gouge near the rim below C in CENT on the reverse represent the most prominent die markers. Scratches from O in ONE provide additional reverse confirmation. The proof context is especially relevant for tripled dies because polished surfaces preserve the fine distinctions between three overlapping hub impressions with greater fidelity than business strikes, where luster lines can obscure boundaries between second and third impressions. Detecting tripling requires resolving three distinct positions rather than two, a task proof surface clarity makes feasible.
