1970 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Proof Large Date - Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-034

Description

Presented with a proof-explicit title, this entry for WDDO-034 on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent documents close counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST on a proof Large Date die. The "close CCW" characterization means the rotational displacement between hub impressions is modest — the primary and secondary images overlap extensively, with only narrow separation visible at letter edges. Detecting close CCW spread requires methodical examination under magnification, looking for asymmetric displacement where letters on one side of the inscription shift slightly upward and those on the opposite side shift downward. No significant die markers have been documented. While the absence of markers makes quick screening difficult, proof surface quality compensates: proof dies produce exceptionally sharp design edges, and close doubling indistinguishable from die wear on a business strike can be resolved against the crisp baselines of proof lettering. WDDO-034 represents the subtler end of the 1970-S proof doubled die spectrum — a contrast to dramatic entries like WDDO-027 or WDDO-029.
