1970 (D) Kennedy Half Dollar - Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Light spread on the stars in the outer circle and between the rays identifies this 1970 Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar, the final year of the 40% silver clad composition. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-381, DMR-008, four die stages document the progression. Stage A shows die gouges on ED of UNITED at EDS, with the obverse also at EDS. Stage B introduces a die gouge under the star below E of STATES and a light die gouge over E of LIBERTY at MDS. Stage C shows die scratches running northeast-southwest on the reverse at LMDS, with the obverse also at LMDS. Stage D reaches LDS (unconfirmed). This variety can be found in small date Mint Sets, and the reverse is identified as RDV-002 (Flared G). The 1970-D Kennedy Half Dollar was not released for general circulation, appearing only in mint sets, which makes any die variety from this date inherently scarcer in the marketplace. The 40% silver composition — 80% silver outer layers bonded to a 21% silver inner core — ended with the 1970 issue, giving this date significance as the last silver-content Kennedy Half Dollar for regular production.
