1968 (S) Proof Kennedy Half Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-002

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-002 and by Wexler as WDDO-001, this is a doubled die obverse on the 1968-S proof Kennedy half dollar, cross-referenced as FS-101. Wexler writes the number FS-50-1968S-101, and VarietyVista gives FS-101 (014). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong clockwise Class I spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, LIBERTY, the nose, the eyebrow, the upper hair details and the designer's initials, with the 8 tripled. Its obverse marker is a die gouge between the lower right of the 6 and the rim; no reverse markers are noted. Bill Affanato submitted the coin, and CONECA lists it as 2-O-I. VarietyVista, which does not name a reporter, records a strong spread on all the lettering, most of all on the R of TRUST and the 8 of the date. It marks the coin as a proof with reverse design variety RDV-002 (Flared G) and tracks it under marker codes UVC-137 and DMR-004. Both sides are early in stage A. In stage B the obverse is early-middle and a die gouge sits beside the star under the U of UNITED. In stage C the obverse is in a middle die state and that gouge is gone. Stage D, a late die state, is unconfirmed.
