1968-D Variety WMHR-001

Description

WMHR-001 on the 1968-D Washington Quarter is a Working Master Hub Reverse variety catalogued under CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI, the same master hub that produced WMHR-001 entries at the Philadelphia Mint and at multiple other mints through 1974. Because the doubling resides in the working master hub — the intermediate tool used to create working dies — every die made from this hub inherits the identical spread, unlike a conventional doubled die where only one die is affected. The SD-1 designation is confirmed by the pointed leaf to the left of the arrowheads on the reverse. On this Denver business strike, the spread toward the center appears on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath elements, decreasing left to right. The die markers on individual working dies vary, as each die will carry its own field marks despite sharing the hub-derived doubling. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
