Description
Struck in the early years of the copper-nickel clad composition adopted in 1965 when silver was removed from circulating coinage, this 1968 quarter was produced at the Denver Mint, bearing the "D" mintmark. The obverse features John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's 1786 bust, surrounded by "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings clutching arrows and an olive branch, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "QUARTER DOLLAR."
