1968-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
ErrorDescription
Brian A. Ribar documented this 1968-D Jefferson Nickel as WDDO-006, a Class I Rotated Hub Doubling with a close spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials FS. Class I doubling results from a simple rotation of the hub between die impressions, producing displacement that radiates from a central axis. The "close" spread here is consistent with a small rotation angle producing visible but tight letter displacement. Obverse die markers include two die gouges and a die scratch to the left of the L of LIBERTY, and a die gouge inside the lower portion of the 8 of the date. On the reverse, a die gouge is present between the E and P of E PLURIBUS UNUM. The designer's initials FS — for Felix Schlag, who won the 1938 design competition — were added to the obverse die in 1966, making their presence on the 1968-D die a modern addition. The 1968-D had a Denver Mint production of approximately 91.2 million coins. The Wexler Variety ID for this entry is 1968-D WDDO-006.
