1968 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Classified as Class I Rotated Hub Doubling, this 1968 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel preserves a close spread across multiple obverse elements — IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date all exhibit the secondary impression characteristic of a rotated hub misalignment. Class I doubling results when the hub and die are slightly rotated relative to each other during a secondary hubbing, producing a spread that radiates in a consistent rotational direction across the die face. The 1968 date carries special significance for Jefferson Nickels: it marks the year the Mint moved mint marks from the reverse to the obverse on this denomination, ending a practice in place since the series began in 1938. Die markers anchor the attribution — the obverse displays a die dot below the N of IN and a die scratch below the LI of LIBERTY, while the reverse carries a die gouge between the E and R of AMERICA. Cataloged by Ben Peters and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1968-D WDDO-004, this Class I variety documents one of the early doubled die obverses produced after the mint mark relocation.
