Description

DDO-006, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1967 Special Mint Set Kennedy half dollar, with multiple spreads that reach six images in the hair under the R of LIBERTY. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-101, written FS-50-1967-101 by Wexler. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties gives the doubling in detail. The lower serifs of RTY and the hair strands below and left of the R of LIBERTY are quintupled, and the upper hair beneath those strands was hubbed up to six times. Doubling also shows on hair strands lying between BE and the E of LIBERTY. The upper serifs of L and I, and all the bars and upper serifs of BER, are at least tripled. IN GOD WE TRUST grows stronger from left to right, from doubling through tripling to quadrupling, with the ST of TRUST the strongest, and the date shows light doubling that also increases to the right, with the 7 tripled. Its obverse markers are five small die dots just above the point of the bust and two short die scratches left of the eye. Wexler identifies the reverse as WDDR-043, with a die chip touching the lower left upright of the F in OF and running nearly to its bottom, and a die gouge beside the R of DOLLAR on its left. Timothy J. Wissert submitted the coin. CONECA lists the die as 6-O-II, and Wexler notes the variety was formerly listed as WDDO-023. VarietyVista, crediting D. Bonnett, describes a strong sextuple spread on RTY and the hair under the R of LIBERTY, with several spreads on the lettering that are strongest on the right side, and marks the coin SMS. Under marker codes UVC-113 and DMR-008, both sides are early in stage A and middle in stage B; stage C, a late die state, is unconfirmed.
