Description
The 1967 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar is a special strike half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver Clad 1965-1970 series. Total mintage reached 1.8 million. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts, while the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Designed by Gilroy Roberts/Frank Gasparro. Struck in 40% silver, 60% copper, weighing 11.5 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a 150 reeds edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6847. The Kennedy Half Dollar was rushed into production in early 1964, just weeks after President Kennedy's assassination. The 1964 issues are collected for both historical significance and silver content. The 1964 Accented Hair variety and various proof finishes are notable. The silver-clad 1965-1970 issues contain 40% silver.
