Class VI doubling, also known as distorted hub doubling, occurs when the hub face distorts under pressure during the hubbing process, producing a design spread that converges toward the center of the die rather than shifting in a uniform direction. The examined specimen came from a 1967 Special Mint Set (SMS), giving it proof-like surfaces that enhance the visibility of the doubling. SMS coins were produced from 1965 through 1967 as replacements for traditional proof sets during the coinage shortage of the mid-1960s, when the Mint suspended proof production and removed mint marks from all coins. Die markers include a short vertical die gouge to the left of the L in LIBERTY on the obverse, and a small die dot to the right of the top of the second S in STATES on the reverse.
