Description

Exhibiting a remarkable quadruple spread — four distinct hub impressions visible on the same die — this 1967 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-013 shows medium quadruple spread on ERTY of LIBERTY, creating four overlapping images of each letter that document three separate hub misalignment events after the initial impression. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-349 and DMR-024, the variety is struck in the Special Mint Set format that replaced proof production from 1965 through 1967. Die state markers include a die gouge dot at the upper right of the E in LIBERTY in mid die state, plus die gouges at the upper and lower left of the 9 in the date. The reverse is documented in mid die state as well. Quadruple spread is uncommon in the doubled die census, as most varieties show only double or occasionally triple impressions — four distinct hub applications on a single die represent an unusual sequence of repeated misalignment during die preparation. The 1967 SMS Kennedy Half was struck in 40% silver clad composition at the San Francisco Mint, which handled Special Mint Set production during the proof set hiatus.
