1967 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006
Error
Description
Produced exclusively in Special Mint Sets during the 1965-1967 period when the U.S. Mint eliminated proof coinage and standard mint marks as anti-hoarding measures, this DDO-006 Kennedy Half Dollar displays a strong sextuple spread on RTY and the hair beneath the R of LIBERTY, with multiple additional spreads visible across the lettering — strongest on the right side of the inscriptions. The SMS designation is significant: these coins received a distinctive satin-to-proof-like finish that often preserves die variety diagnostics with exceptional clarity. Cross-referenced as FS-101, this variety carries one of the most widely recognized Fivaz-Stanton attributions in the Kennedy series. Die markers tracked by VarietyVista under UVC-113 and DMR-008 document three progressive die stages — Stage A with obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B transitioning both sides to Mid-Die State, and Stage C reaching Late Die State, though this final stage remains unconfirmed. The silver-clad composition of 1965-1970 Kennedy halves (40% silver bonded to a copper core) gives these coins a distinctive edge appearance and weight that differs from both the earlier 90% silver issues and the later copper-nickel clad pieces.
