1967 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009
Error
Description
Found on the 1967 Special Mint Set Kennedy Half Dollar — a coin that is neither proof nor standard business strike — DDO-009 shows medium spread on RTY of LIBERTY and the hair detail under R, with lighter doubling on TRUST. The 1965-1967 period saw the Mint suspend proof production entirely, instead offering Special Mint Sets with a distinctive satin-like finish that occupies a middle ground between the sharp mirror surfaces of proofs and the luster of circulation strikes. Cataloged as UVC-329 with DMR-020, Stage A provides key early die state markers: light die scratches in the back of the head and a medium-sized die gouge positioned east of the clouds, both observable in early die state. Stage B shows both the obverse and reverse at mid-die state, with late die state unconfirmed. The 1967 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in the 40% silver composition adopted for the denomination in 1965, replacing the 90% silver of the inaugural 1964 issue. Medium spread on the hair detail under R is particularly diagnostic, as the fine parallel hair strands amplify the displacement into visible doubled lines that contrast sharply against the SMS satin finish.
