Description

Holding the premier catalog position as WDDO-001 in the Wexler files (Wexler Variety ID 1966 50c WDDO-001), this Kennedy Half Dollar obverse die was either the first discovered or the most significant among the nine or more doubled die obverses documented for the 1966 date. The WDDO-001 designation traditionally indicates either chronological priority of discovery or superlative doubling strength within the date-mint family, giving this variety primacy among its siblings in catalog ordering. The 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar's position in American numismatic history extends beyond variety collecting: it represents the second year of the 40% silver-clad composition introduced in 1965 as Congress reduced the precious metal content of circulating coinage. The 40% silver-clad construction layers 80% silver outer skins over a core of approximately 21% silver, producing a total weight of 11.5 grams with a silver content of approximately 4.6 grams per coin — enough intrinsic value to drive extensive public hoarding that depleted newly minted half dollars from circulation almost immediately upon release. Gilroy Roberts designed the obverse portrait of John F. Kennedy, which was adopted in 1964 as a memorial to the president assassinated the previous year. The deeply sculpted hair detail, prominent ear, and strong profile relief that characterize the Kennedy design provide exceptionally rich diagnostic terrain for doubled die detection, as the numerous parallel hair waves, curved contours, and incised inscription elements each respond to hub displacement in distinctive ways that facilitate both detection and classification. Without mintmarks (suspended 1965-1967), all 1966 half dollars bear no facility identification. WDDO-001's premier status makes it the most sought-after variety in the 1966 Kennedy DDO family and the logical starting point for collectors building a comprehensive set.
