1965 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Produced as a Special Mint Set (SMS) issue during the 1965–1967 period when the U.S. Mint suspended proof production, the 1965 DDR-003 Kennedy half dollar exhibits medium to strong spread on all outer lettering and stars in the heraldic circle, with the strongest doubling concentrated on STATES OF AMERICA. SMS coins received a higher-quality strike than regular business issues but lacked the full mirror finish of proofs, giving them a distinctive satin-like surface. This half dollar is composed of 40% silver clad — the composition used for Kennedy halves from 1965 through 1970. Cataloged under UVC-069 / DMR-009 by VarietyVista, die stage progression is detailed: Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed), while Stage B reaches Mid Die State with a light die gouge on the rim above the U in UNITED, a light die gouge in the upper O of OF, and minor doubling visible on WE TRUST. Stage C is Late Die State (unconfirmed). The Stage B die markers — particularly the rim gouge above UNITED — serve as attribution points independent of the doubling. SMS Kennedy half varieties from 1965 are scarce and carry the dual appeal of silver composition and Special Mint Set provenance.
