1965 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Struck during the Special Mint Set (SMS) production era, this 1965 Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-003 displays light hub doubling spread on WE TRUST, the digits 65 of the date, and TY of LIBERTY. The 1965 date occupies a unique position in United States coinage history — it was the first year of the silver-clad composition for Kennedy Half Dollars, reducing silver content from 90% to 40% as the Coinage Act of 1965 responded to the nationwide silver shortage. No proof sets were produced from 1965 through 1967; instead, the Mint issued Special Mint Sets with enhanced finish quality that fell between business strike and proof standards. VarietyVista assigns this die the classification codes UVC-065 and DMR-005, tracking three documented die states. Stage A shows the obverse in early die state with diagnostic die gouges: one on the D of UNITED and another on the R of AMERICA, both serving as Stage A-specific attribution markers. Stage B introduces a new diagnostic — a die gouge to the right of the upper 5 in the date — with the reverse progressing to mid-die state. Stage C represents late die state, though this final stage remains unconfirmed pending additional specimens. The light spread character of the doubling means careful examination under magnification is necessary to observe the displacement, particularly on the WE TRUST and date elements where the separation between primary and secondary images is most evident. SMS Kennedy Half Dollars with documented doubled dies carry additional collector interest because the enhanced striking quality of Special Mint Set production can make hub doubling diagnostics more distinct than on standard business strikes.
