Description

The sole cataloged Wexler doubled die reverse for the 1965 Lincoln cent, WDDR-001 displays a very close clockwise spread visible on the upper letters of AMERICA, the designer's initials FG, the lower letters of ONE CENT, and the upper UN of UNITED. The distribution of the doubling across four distinct reverse design elements — the country name, the denomination, the mint motto, and the designer's monogram — provides collectors with multiple diagnostic checkpoints for confirming the variety. A close clockwise spread indicates that the hub rotated very slightly in a CW direction between impressions during the die manufacturing process, displacing the secondary image by a narrow margin. The close designation means the separation requires careful examination under magnification to detect reliably, but the fact that the spread manifests across widely separated design areas means collectors can examine whichever element is clearest on their particular specimen. On the obverse, a short die scratch runs north from the center of the nose. The reverse carries several markers: a die gouge inside the upper N in UNITED, a small die gouge to the left of the upper T in UNITED, and a small die gouge SE of the second A in AMERICA.
