Description

Classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling, this 1965 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-001 exhibits a close spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM increasing from left to right, with a very close spread also showing on AMERICA. The left-to-right increasing pattern on the motto — where the E shows the least doubling and UNUM shows the most — is diagnostically significant because it maps the hub displacement vector's angular relationship to each letter's position, with rightmost elements receiving progressively greater displacement relative to the coin's center. Obverse die markers include a notably diagonal die scratch in the field below the second T of TRUST and east of Jefferson's forehead, plus a die crack running from the upper portion of E to the R of LIBERTY — a crack that traverses five letters' worth of inscription space, making it a substantial and easily located diagnostic feature. Reverse markers include a short diagonal die gouge just right of center of the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM and a small die gouge (dot) between the N and second U of UNUM just above their centers. The 1965 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson portrait obverse and Monticello reverse. The 1965 date is historically significant as the first year without mintmarks following their removal from all denominations during the coinage shortage crisis of the mid-1960s — mintmarks would not return until 1968. As WDDR-001 for the 1965 date, this variety holds the primary doubled die reverse position, and its Class II distorted hub mechanism produces the convergent (center-directed) spread that distinguishes it from the more common rim-directed Class I rotated hub doubling.
