Description

The 1965 Jefferson Nickel is a nickel produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The U.S. Mint produced 136.1 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 98% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. No mint marks appeared on any U.S. coins, a response to the coin shortage crisis. Special Mint Set coins replaced proof sets. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $12 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4077.
