Description

First cataloged rim cud for the 1965 Jefferson Nickel, struck during the transition year when the Coinage Act of 1965 eliminated mintmarks from all denominations — meaning this coin bears no mintmark despite being produced at either Philadelphia or Denver. The removal of mintmarks, intended to discourage speculative hoarding during the mid-1960s coin shortage, makes it impossible to attribute this cud to a specific facility. Initially documented on October 1, 2013, by Cuds on Coins with no additional cross-references established. The 1965 nickel maintained the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel clad composition while dimes and quarters transitioned to copper-nickel clad, so the nickel alloy itself was unchanged. However, the enormous combined production across both active mints — over 136 million nickels — subjected dies to heavy use. Rim cuds on Jefferson Nickels develop where die metal fatigues at the rim-to-field boundary, fracturing under repeated striking impact and creating the characteristic raised blob at the coin's edge.
