Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with technical data UVC-431 and DMR-006, this second doubled die obverse for the 1964 Roosevelt Silver Dime presents medium spread across a broad range of obverse elements: IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials (JS for John R. Sinnock, appearing side by side), the date, and the back of Roosevelt's head, plus distinctive notches on the letters LIB of LIBERTY. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State (EDS), Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The obverse is identified as ODV-011 with the "blunt 9" characteristic — a die variety where the numeral 9 in the date has a truncated or blunted tail, providing a secondary diagnostic independent of the doubling. The 1964 Roosevelt Dime carries extraordinary significance as the final silver dime produced for general circulation — the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated the transition to copper-nickel clad composition, ending a 173-year tradition of silver dimes dating to the first 1792 issues.
