1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010

Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1964 10-cent Proof WDDO-010, this doubled die obverse variety appears on a 1964 proof Roosevelt dime struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The 1964 Roosevelt dime represents the final year of 90% silver composition for circulating dimes, weighing 2.50 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter. Philadelphia produced 3,950,762 proof Roosevelt dimes in 1964, the last proof silver dimes before the transition to copper-nickel clad coinage. The doubling on WDDO-010 presents as a very close spread from towards the center, visible on the designer's initials JS (John Sinnock) and slightly on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. The center-directed spread indicates the hub shifted slightly inward between impressions during die preparation. Obverse die markers include a blunt tail on the 9 digit, a die scratch on the rim above the LI in LIBERTY, a die gouge to the left of the I in IN, and a die gouge to the left of the E in LIBERTY. The reverse of this die is itself a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files, making this a coin where both the obverse and reverse dies exhibit hub doubling from separate die preparation events. This dual doubled die status elevates the interest of WDDO-010 among variety collectors, as coins struck from die pairs where both dies show doubling are relatively uncommon. As a proof issue, this coin was struck on specially prepared polished planchets with enhanced striking pressure, which can make the already subtle doubling characteristics more sharply defined. The 1964 proof Roosevelt dime holds special significance as the end of the silver proof dime era, and varieties from this final silver year are avidly sought by collectors.
