1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar - Doubled Working Hub Reverse WWHR-001

Description

Representing a specialized category of die variety distinct from standard doubled dies, this doubled working hub reverse on the 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar documents doubling that occurred not during the final hubbing of the working die, but during the creation of the working hub itself — an intermediate step in the die production chain. In the multi-generation die manufacturing process, a master die creates a master hub, which in turn creates working hubs, which then produce the working dies used for striking coins. When misalignment or distortion occurs during the working hub stage, every working die made from that hub inherits the doubling, potentially spreading the variety across multiple die pairs. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1964 50c WWHR-001, this is the first documented doubled working hub reverse for the inaugural Kennedy Half Dollar. The 1964 Kennedy Half was struck in 90% silver at both Philadelphia and Denver in enormous quantities — driven by intense public demand following President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963. Gilroy Roberts designed the obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro created the heraldic eagle reverse, a design adapted from the Presidential Seal that would continue with modifications through the clad era.
