Description

Third of four documented doubled working hub reverses for the 1961 Jefferson Nickel, attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID: 1961 Working Hub Reverse 3 (WWHR-003). The concentration of four hub-level doubling varieties across both 1961 and 1962 — with four WWHRs each — creates a pattern that suggests the early 1960s may represent a period of elevated hub manufacturing variability in the Jefferson Nickel production pipeline. Working hubs are intermediate tools in the die hierarchy: produced by impressing a master die into a hub blank, they in turn produce the working dies that actually strike coins. Doubling at the hub level requires that the master die's impression shifted between two passes on the hub blank, and when this occurs, every downstream working die inherits the identical doubling, potentially affecting thousands of struck coins per affected hub. The 1961 date falls within the post-war era of American coinage, when the economy was booming and demand for circulating coins was rising steadily toward the crisis levels that would trigger the Coinage Act of 1965. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait and Monticello design, in continuous use since 1938, was manufactured through well-established procedures — yet the four-hub doubling count for this date proves that even routine production could yield significant varieties when die manufacturing equipment drifted from optimal alignment.
