1964-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-016

Description

From the Denver Mint's inaugural production of Gilroy Roberts' Kennedy Half Dollar in 90% silver, DDO-016 documents light triple spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the L and Y of LIBERTY. Die markers are cataloged as UVC-413 and DMR-029. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A in EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a strong die gouge across the upper B of LIBERTY in MDS with the reverse in MDS, and Stage C in LDS (unconfirmed). The reverse die is RDV-002 (Flared G), referring to the distinctive style of Frank Gasparro's initial where the lower stroke of the G flares outward. Denver Mint regular strike. The 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar was produced in enormous quantities as the public hoarded the new coin honoring President Kennedy, issued just months after his assassination. Triple spread—three distinct hub impressions rather than the usual two—represents an unusual degree of die reworking, and combined with the Flared G reverse variant, this die marriage offers multiple attribution-worthy features.
