1964-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-013

Description

From the inaugural year of the Kennedy Half Dollar series, this 1964-D DDO-013 exhibits medium spread on IN GOD, the chin, eye, LIBERTY, and the hair under the R of LIBERTY. The reverse is identified as RDV-002 — the Flared G variety, distinguished by the bottom serif of the G in GOD flaring outward from the letter body. Die markers include UVC-053 and DMR-015. A well-documented three-stage die progression tracks the die's service life: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state; Stage B showing numerous die scratches developing in front of the profile at mid-die state with the reverse also at mid-die state; and Stage C where die scratches cut through WE at late die state, with the reverse also in late die state. The 1964-D Kennedy Half was struck on ninety-percent silver planchets in enormous quantities as the public hoarded the new design honoring President Kennedy. The combination of first-year status, hub doubling, and the RDV-002 reverse makes DDO-013 a multi-faceted variety.
