1964-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with technical data UVC-051 and DMR-013, this eleventh doubled die obverse for the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar shows medium spread on the letters BER in LIBERTY and all hair detail at the top of Kennedy's head — a distribution that places the most visible doubling in the highest-relief areas of the obverse design. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B showing the obverse in Mid Die State with a strong die scratch developing through the stars under STATES on the reverse, and Stage C reaching Late Die State (unconfirmed). The reverse is identified as RDV-002 with the "Flared G" sub-variety, a diagnostic reverse die characteristic where the letter G in "GOD" (from the reverse motto) has a distinctive flared serif. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar was the inaugural issue of the series, rushed into production following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, and struck in 90% silver composition. The enormous public demand for these coins — driven by grief, patriotism, and collector interest — resulted in massive mintages at both Philadelphia and Denver, consuming hundreds of die pairs. Gilroy Roberts' obverse portrait, adapted from his earlier presidential medal design, features detailed hair rendering that serves as one of the primary areas where hub doubling manifests most visibly. DDO-011's medium spread on the hair detail and LIBERTY inscription makes it one of the more readily identifiable doubled die obverses among the eleven documented for 1964-D, though magnification remains necessary for confident attribution.
