Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista and cross-referenced as FS-501 (Fivaz-Stanton), the 1964-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007 on the Kennedy Half Dollar shows light spread on WE TRUST, TY of LIBERTY, and the designer's initials GR (Gilroy Roberts). The 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver at 12.50 grams and 30.6 mm diameter — the only year of full silver Kennedy Half Dollar production. Die markers from VarietyVista are UVC-047 and DMR-009, with three documented die states: Stage A at EDS shows the reverse listed as RPM-001 with a strong secondary mintmark, Stage B at MDS shows a medium secondary mintmark plus die scratches from the eagle's talon to the star, and Stage C at LDS is unconfirmed. VarietyVista notes the reverse uses the RDV-002 (Flared G) design variant and is listed as RPM-001, making this a combination DDO/RPM variety with the FS-501 Cherrypickers' Guide recognition. The RPM-001 shows a repunched D mintmark that weakens progressively from Stage A (strong secondary) to Stage B (medium secondary), as continued die use gradually wore away the remnants of the initial misplaced mintmark punch. The FS-501 designation in the Cherrypickers' Guide confirms this is a widely recognized and collected variety within the Kennedy Half Dollar series, and the silver composition adds intrinsic value beyond the variety premium.
