Description

From the inaugural year of the Kennedy Half Dollar, this 1964-D DDO-006 displays medium spread on WE TRUST, TY of LIBERTY, and hair under the R of LIBERTY, with light spread on IN GOD. Cross-referenced as FS-106, this variety is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-046, DMR-008. The reverse is RDV-002 (Flared G), a reverse design variety designation indicating the distinctive flared serif on the G of the Great Seal. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C is late die state featuring a die scratch from the lower right G of GOD through OD to the bust, with the reverse at late die state. The 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint, and enormous public demand driven by President Kennedy's assassination the previous year made these coins instant keepsakes. The combination of the FS-106 doubled die designation and the RDV-002 Flared G reverse makes this a die marriage of particular interest to Kennedy Half specialists tracking both obverse varieties and reverse design subtypes.
