1964-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-103, the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-003 is a key combo variety: it pairs a doubled die obverse with RPM-006 on the same die, making it simultaneously a DDO and a repunched mintmark. The obverse shows strong spread on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, L and TY of LIBERTY, and hair above and behind the ear, with dramatic tripling on WE TRUST. The reverse is struck from RDV-002, the Flared G die variety, and is listed as RPM-006. Cataloged under UVC-043 and DMR-005, three die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state: die scratches run south-southwest around the B of LIBERTY, the reverse is listed as RPM-006, and a heavy die gouge extends north from the upper left E of STATES to the rim. Stage C is late die state, unconfirmed. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 90% silver — the only year at that composition before the series moved to 40% silver clad in 1965. Gilroy Roberts designed the obverse; Frank Gasparro designed the reverse. The FS-103 rating, DDO+RPM combo, tripling on WE TRUST, and RDV-002 reverse collectively make DDO-003 a premier 1964-D Kennedy variety.
