Description

Medium spread covering multiple reverse elements — ONE DIME, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLU of PLURIBUS, and the left stem — marks this 1963 Proof Roosevelt Dime DDR-005 as a variety with broad diagnostic visibility. The partial spread on PLURIBUS, affecting only the E PLU portion while leaving the remaining letters unaffected, suggests the hub displacement tapered across the die face with sufficient shift to manifest on the left side of the inscription but attenuating before reaching the right. Die markers UVC-405 and DMR-012 identify this variety within the VarietyVista system. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at Early Die State captures the doubling at its sharpest, while Stages B and C at Mid and Late Die State remain unconfirmed. The 1963 proof Roosevelt Dime was among the final proof issues struck in 90% silver composition before the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned dimes to copper-nickel clad, making proof silver dimes from this era particularly collectible. The left stem doubling offers an often-overlooked diagnostic zone where spread manifests on the olive branch's organic curves rather than on straight-edged lettering.
