Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team, this 1963 Proof Washington Quarter WDDO-015 is struck in 90% silver and displays hub doubling spread toward the rim on IN GOD WE TRUST, with a clockwise spread on the bottom of IN. Proof Washington Quarters of this era were struck at Philadelphia with mirror fields and frosted devices, and the polish cycle that produces proof surfaces can interact with doubling: in Stage B, the clockwise spread at the bottom of IN was deliberately abraded away to clean up the appearance, and queue details were similarly abraded. Die markers provide the attribution anchors that survive polishing: Stage A reverse markers include a die scratch in the upper second S of STATES, a gouge between the second S of STATES and the O of OF, and short gouges from the rim between the R and I of AMERICA. Stage B reverse markers are identical to Stage A — the same three reverse features persist, since only the obverse face was abraded. The two-stage obverse progression, with Stage B's abraded obverse paired to the consistent Stage A/B reverse markers, makes WDDO-015 a variety where reverse examination is as important as obverse work for establishing complete attribution. A die gouge can be found between the upper second S in STATES and the O in OF. Short die gouges extend from the rim between the R and I in AMERICA.
