1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

Spread directed toward the center of the die characterizes WDDO-007 on the 1963 Proof Washington Quarter, with the displaced image visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, and the lower queue — the ponytail detail on Washington's portrait descending below the bust truncation. A center-directed spread pattern suggests convergent doubling where peripheral design elements are pulled inward by the hub displacement, creating a tightening effect rather than outward expansion. No significant obverse die markers have been documented, but the reverse offers two diagnostic points: a die gouge to the right of the bottom of the left branch, and a small die gouge to the right of the upper second T in STATES. The 1963 Proof Washington Quarter was struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver, the final full year before the Coinage Act of 1965 would mandate the transition to copper-nickel clad. The involvement of the queue — a relatively fine design element — rewards examination under higher magnification, where the displaced secondary impression along the hair strands becomes distinguishable from the primary engraving.
