Description

Deep into the reverse doubled die census for the 1963 proof Roosevelt dime, WDDR-028 shows a spread toward the center on USA — the abbreviated form of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the reverse. The 90% silver composition of pre-1965 proof dimes gives these coins a distinctive luster that can both aid and complicate doubled die detection: the reflective proof surfaces highlight any irregularity but can also produce optical effects that mimic doubling under certain lighting angles. The Wexler Team cataloged this as Wexler Variety ID: 1963 10¢ Pr WDDR-028, with photographs contributed by Brian Ribar, a noted die variety photographer whose images have aided attributions across multiple series. No significant obverse or reverse die markers were recorded beyond the doubled die itself. A "spread toward the center" indicates the secondary hub impression displaced the affected letters inward relative to the die's peripheral rim — the opposite of the more common outward spread. The high WDDR number (028) documents the extraordinary thoroughness with which the proof Roosevelt dime series has been examined for die varieties. Philadelphia produced all proof dimes in this era, with each coin receiving multiple impressions from carefully polished dies on selected planchets. The proof dime mintage for 1963 totaled approximately 3.08 million pieces.
