1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

Eighth Wexler-cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1963 Proof Roosevelt Dime, WDDR-008 presents close spread towards the center on AMERICA, NUM of UNUM, and outside oak leaves in the reverse wreath. Inward-directed spread indicates the secondary hub impression was slightly more centered than the primary, compressing letter contours toward the coin's center — an unusual displacement direction producing a subtly different visual effect from the more common rimward spreads. A die gouge to the right of the upper second S in STATES provides an attribution point independent of the doubling. The 1963 date represents the penultimate year of 90% silver proof production before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver circulating coinage, making proof silver varieties from 1963 among the last of their kind. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime was in its eighteenth year, struck on silver planchets at 17.9mm at Philadelphia. Inspect AMERICA and NUM of UNUM for centerward spread, examine outside oak leaves for similar inward displacement, and locate the die gouge right of the upper second S in STATES.
